Artist biography:
Born in 1962, Mark
Beale grew up in Tidewater, Virginia. He began exploring the creeks
and rivers at an early age and learned to love the coastal
landscape. As a teenager, he began studying studio art in local
workshops with Barclay Sheaks and later with Theodore Turner at the
University of Virginia where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. In
1989, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he currently
lives with his wife Terri. His painting style draws from 19th
Century Tonalist and Impressionist schools and emphasizes our
emotional connection to the natural world. Beale has won acceptance
into national and international juried exhibitions and earned
multiple awards. In 2011, he was selected for inclusion in Marquis
Who’s Who in American Art and The Center for the Study of Southern
Art at The Morris Museum in Augusta, GA. He is a member of the Oil
Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, and
has served on
the Board of Directors of the Charleston Artist Guild and as
Editor
of their publication Easel. His
work is represented in collections
across the country.
Artist statement:
“My
inspiration springs from an appreciation for the natural world and
our emotional connection to it. I enjoy painting the pure landscape
and want the viewer to project themselves into the painting and
participate in it. Working primarily through visual memory and
imagination, interesting light effects and a sense of atmosphere are
used to emphasize the mood of the scene and the feelings that
God’s creation inspires in us. The emotion of the viewer observing
the painting is the subject of all of my work.”
